The global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the lives of all of us, most notably the elderly and vulnerable who have had to shield. This has made everyday tasks such as going to the shops an anxious and stressful experience. During the first lockdown JDL was desperate to help out. We came up with an essential hamper no-fee delivery service, providing fresh and local produce to anywhere in Kent. We had to adapt business accordingly, so we became an essential delivery service.

Supermarket online delivery slots were booked out for weeks, so our hampers provided those in need with a sustainable and delicious alternative, supporting small businesses in the process. Customers could avoid queues and maintain social distancing with hampers delivered straight to their door. Our drivers were equipped with full PPE, so customers could rest easy knowing they were safe.

The affordable hampers included all of the essential fruit, veg, pantry items, tinned goods and a variety of fresh locally sourced meats from our award-winning butcher, meaning that they could be frozen to stay fresher for longer. Caring for the community is one of our core values at JDL, and to do our bit for the NHS we donated to Captain Tom’s NHS fund for every hamper that was sold on VE weekend in May.

The essential hamper deliveries were so successful that they were picked up by BBC South East News. Watch the interview with Nick below about our essential deliveries during the Spring 2020 lockdown.
